by Angling Times | Published on 10 01 2022 Become A Member A FORMER match angler has come within a whisker of breaking the British zander record with a 20lb 5oz fish from the River Trent. As well as being a venue record, it's believed to be the UK's fourth-biggest zed.
Britain’s biggestever canal zander landed Angling Times
The 20lb 8oz giant was banked by Ian Wilson from the River Trent, and is the largest ever reported from the popular venue, just bettering Graham Boddice's 20lb 5oz fish caught last year. In fact, it's the third biggest zander ever reported in the UK, and falls just 13oz short of James Benfield's 21lb 5oz national best from 2007.

The IGFA All-Tackle world record zander was caught in Lago Maggiore, Switzerland in June 2016 weighing 11.48 kg (25.3 lb).. North Dakota in 1989 and has remained ever since.. As the largest member of the perch family, zander is a popular game fish in the United Kingdom.

So it is no surprise that David Hayes' celebrated 5.41 kg (11 pound, 15 ounce) smallmouth has seen its share of controversy over the years. Hayes caught his record fish on July 9, 1955 while trolling a lure in Dale Hollow Reservoir, Tennessee, USA. Hayes held the All-Tackle title for 41 years, despite swirling rumors denouncing his catch.
