Erstmals urkundlich erwähnt wird eine Burg Strünkede im Jahr 1243. Sie wurde von den Herren von Strünkede errichtet, die schon für das Jahr 1142 genannt sind. Die Burganlage war mit Türmen und wassergefüllten Gräben - den Gräften - ausgestattet. Einige dieser Gräben und der große Schlossteich sind noch heute im Schlosspark vorhanden.
